The Devil Made Me Do It!

When I was young there was a show on television called the “Flip Wilson Show.” Just about in every show Flip Wilson would say, “the devil made me do it.”

Everyone would all laugh, but is that statement really funny? Can the Devil make you do things?

Let us get deeper, what does the Bible really say about the Devil and his demons?

Let me give you several Biblical truths for you and your family to think about this morning.

  1. The devil and his demons are real even though a high tech world may indicate that they may be an old fashion idea.

Matthew 25:41  English Standard Version (ESV)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

1 John 4:4  (ESV)

Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

  1. The devil and his demons are active in our world today.

Ephesians 6:10-12  (ESV)

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Zechariah 4:6  (ESV)

Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

  1. The devil and his demons are after the believer.

1 Peter 5:6-9  (ESV)

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Romans 8:37  (ESV)

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

  1. The devil and his demons have character that is directly opposed to the mind and heart of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 20:7-10  (ESV)

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven[a] and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

1 John 3:8  (ESV)

Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.

Acts 10:38  (ESV)

38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.
